Christopher Stuart Lloyd
A pure soul known for his kindness and willingness to be there for so many of us, Chris forged a unique artistic path, fixed many a leaking roof, kept homes warm with firewood, took pride in his meticulous car detailing, and delighted in the company of his “beautiful women” and male friends whom he knew for 20, 30, even 40 years.
Chris influenced the lives of so many community members along the stretch of Highway One between Fort Bragg and Mendocino that it is hard – if not impossible – to imagine the place without him.
In Winter 2011 Chris finished work on a masterpiece sculpture composed of hundreds of recovered metal (dating from the 18th – 20th centuries) from the Mendocino Headlands, soon to be featured in a local gallery. One of the select few artists willing to brave the notorious tides along Mendocino’s rocky shores, the motion-sculptures he created are dazzling in their complexity and yet charming to the viewer, engaging with an interplay of light, motion, texture, and sound.
Chris is also renowned locally for his splendid redwood burl suns, featuring burnished, deeply hued center disks with radiating, curved spokes.
You left us too soon, Chris. We’re still reeling from the impact.
An informal gathering to remember Chris took place on Sunday, June 11th at 12 noon in the Cyprus Circle, north side of the Mendocino headlands.
A Christopher S. Lloyd Art Fund has been set up to honor Chris’ artistry and his importance to the greater Mendocino community, and to extend his legacy.
If you would like to share personal stories, photos, and videos of Chris, we welcome your contributions to a special website set up as a “digital memorial” for Chris.
